Glanbia Ingredients Ireland is to receive Irish Government support for its plans to gear up to handle the anticipated increase in milk production after EU quotas are abolished 2015, with an investment package of over €150 million in a new processing facility at Belview in County Kilkenny. The expansion programme is expected to create over 1600 direct and indirect jobs and contribute an estimated €400 million pa to the Irish economy – with particular benefit to farm families and rural communities. Through Enterprise Ireland, the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will part-fund the development of a world-class dairy facility in Belview.

GII is Ireland’s leading dairy ingredients company – processing 1.6 billion litres of milk or 30% of Ireland’s milk pool into a range of dairy ingredients for export to more than 50 countries. The new plant will incorporate two 7.5 tonnes per hour dryers and have an output of 100,000 tonnes of dairy powders per annum.

All produce from the new facility will be destined for export markets. Construction is set to commence on 17 May and the new facility is expected to begin production in Spring 2015.

The scale and scope of Belview is extremely ambitious. As the dairy industry purchases 90% of its inputs from the domestic economy, there will be a maximum impact on the income of farm families – boosting the rural economy and the local industries that will service on-farm expansion.

GIIL enjoys strong commercial relationships, including contract manufacturing with eight other Irish dairy processors. This new scalable facility will provide platforms for further collaboration in the industry.

Jim Bergin, chief executive of GII, says: “The Belview facility is a significant, strategic development for our business. Most of all it reflects our confidence in, and commitment to our 4,300 milk suppliers. By providing this additional processing capacity we will be facilitating milk suppliers in their ambition to avail of the opportunity presented by quota abolition post 2015. We are very pleased that through Enterprise Ireland, the Government is acknowledging the economic contribution of the Belview project.”

He adds: “The Belview plant will be entirely focused on export markets and will supply a range of nutritional powders to an increasing number of regions including the Middle East, Africa, Central America and Asia.”

Smurfit Kappa the European leader in innovative paper based packaging has announced a major investment package consisting of a six-colour flexographic, rotary die-cut press, an enhanced material handling system and corrugator upgrades for its Yate, Bristol plant.

The main investment is part of Smurfit Kappa’s continuing development of its High-Quality Post Print service at the BRC and AIB certified site. Supplying a wide range of customers in the South of England, as well as major national brands and Pan-European customers, Smurfit Kappa Yate has drawn from the knowledge and experience of award winning HQPP, six-colour printing expertise at other Smurfit Kappa UK plants.

Beyond the new machine outlay Smurfit Kappa Yate is upgrading the plant’s material handling system for greater accuracy and reliability, and and when combined with modular enhancements on the corrugator will drive additional improvements in quality and service at the high volume site.

Clive Bowers, CEO Smurfit Kappa UK, explains what the investment is designed to deliver and why it has been undertaken; “We listen continuously to our customers and ask how we can help them achieve their future business objectives. The decorative corrugated market continues to outperform the general market and our customers and potential customers have asked us to leverage our skills in print into the wider corrugated market. Our investment at Yate allows our customers to source the highest quality post print, flexographic packaging and differentiate their products from their competitors in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”

Terry McGivern, Regional Director for Smurfit Kappa South, comments; “Our long-standing expertise of producing award winning HQPP in the UK gives us a unique advantage when working with demanding print requirements on corrugated. Moreover, Yate has had an excellent year in quality and service with complaints per million items produced running at less than one in a million and On time in Full delivery (OTIF) exceeding 98%.. These three investments will help us to improve our industry-leading statistics and provide a compelling case for any customer who needs to source the highest quality, combined with superior service and superb printed corrugated, to look no further than Smurfit Kappa Yate.”?

Nestlé is continuing to invest in Europe with the inauguration of a new £35 million (over SFr49 million) water bottling facility in the United Kingdom. The Nestlé Waters factory in the town of Buxton, which bottles Buxton natural mineral water and Nestlé Pure Life spring water, is the latest in a series of investments the company has made in Europe over the last two years.

These include a £200 million investment to transform its Product Technology Centre for confectionery in York, UK in 2012. In the same year, Nestlé also invested SFr54 million to extend its Purina factory in Hungary, SFr300 million to build a new Nespresso factory in Switzerland, and SFr265 million in a new Nescafe Dolce Gusto factory in Germany.

“The Buxton factory is an excellent example of how we are continuing to invest in Europe despite tough economic conditions,” says Paul Bulcke, chief executive of Nestlé. “This factory will contribute to accelerate the development of our bottled water activities and illustrate our capacity for innovation in production facilities via an approach that combines strong and sustainable production efficiency with outstanding environmental performances.”

Bottled water plays an important role in Nestlé’s nutrition, health and wellness strategy emphasizing that water should be the preferred healthy hydration option and is an important factor against the growing problem of obesity.

The new factory is Nestlé’s most recent multi-million pound investment in the UK. The company recently invested £40 million over the past few years to create a European centre of excellence for Nescafe Cappuccino in Cumbria.

Last year, Nestlé also announced a £310 million investment in its coffee manufacturing business in Tutbury, Derbyshire, creating 425 new jobs.

The 122m cargoship berthed alongside the former conventional ferry (mail) boat Carlisle Pier, from where the cargo will be taken by road convoy, but travelling overnight to avoid traffic and minimise disruption.

This delivery is part of a ‘project’ cargo as a further two shipments are scheduled, however it has been many years since cargoships have called to Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

In the late 1980′s/early 90′s there were relatively frequent calls undertaken by ‘reefer’ ships, vessels equipped with refrigeration capability carrying perishable products.

Some vessels were instead of the ro-ro design, this allowed refrigerated freight-trailers to be driven onboard the ship which berthed at the port’s ferry ramp linkspan.

CLEGG Food Projects has completed a £1.1million upgrade at a site of a leading dairy company to encourage greener ways of working.

The work has been carried out at Dairy Crest’s site in Foston, Derbyshire.

A new link building between the milk bottling site and the adjacent factory that makes plastic bottles means there is a reduced need for vehicle movement across a site that can bottle up to 250 million litres of milk per annum.

Nationally renowned Clegg Food Projects, which provides solutions for major food operations all over the UK, completed the complex project while the Dairy Crest site remained in full operation.

“It was an unusually complicated project since we had to access the bottle-making site while there were still vehicle movements and people working at the site,” said John Moxon, business development director at Clegg Food Projects.

“That required a flexible and co-operative approach to working with the client that meant we could both achieve our aims. We are both very pleased with the results.”

This was the fifth time that Clegg Food Projects has worked on the site since building the Dairy Crest factory at Foston 10 years ago.

The new link building means that bottles are now moved between factories on conveyor belts rather than by wagons, as they were in the past.

This has led to the reduction in vehicle movements across the site which has consequently seen a fall in overall emissions and diesel fuel use.

Clegg Food Projects also constructed a new mezzanine floor, for the installation of conveying and handling equipment, in the bottle-making factory.

“I am delighted that we have completed another project for our client Dairy Crest,” John added. “We have considerable experience in this area and have the expertise to undertake complex design and construction projects that enable our clients to cut costs and work more efficiently.”

Krones’ Steinecker plant is currently manufacturing the biggest brewing vessel in its history: a stainless steel lauter tun called “Pegasus C”, measuring 14 metres in diameter and weighing around 70 tons.
The “Pegasus C”, in which during the brewing process after mashing the liquid wort is separated from the solid spent grains, holds 144,000 litres of liquid with a fill level of one metre. It belongs to a huge order placed by one of the world’s premier beverage producers, as part of a modernisation project for a prestigious, long-established brewery in Dublin, and covering three complete brewing lines. Together with two more lauter tuns, each 11.5 metres in diameter, the “Pegasus C” will in future constitute the heart of the brewery. On-site commissioning will be completed towards the end of 2013, after which the client will possess Europe’s largest brewing facility.

In order to meet the tight deadline, the staff at Krones’ Steinecker plant worked three shifts for about six weeks on the “Pegasus C”. This lauter tun is basically a standard model; what’s unusual about it, though, is its massive size and the polished insulating hood stipulated by the client. It’s only been possible to produce such large brewing vessels at Krones’ Steinecker plant in Freising since the beginning of 2012, when the new pickling shop was completed. The two parts of the 14-metre lauter tun were riveted and polished, and after that separated again for pickling and transport. Together with the transport frame, each part will measure 7.50 x 14.30 metres.

The complete order covers a total of around 60 extra-wide/extra-high packing units, which will have to be moved with heavy-haulage trucks. They will be loaded onto inland waterway barges in Deggendorf and transferred to ships in Rotterdam. Other parts will go via Munich by train to Rotterdam. And more than 1,000 packing units are being delivered by truck. A massive logistical challenge, particularly since the brewery is located right in the heart of Dublin. This means the heavy goods transports have to be routed from the harbour right through the mediaeval city centre.

The advance logistical planning had been ongoing since February 2012; a road survey was carried out, revealing that there are three different routes for delivering the tun, where road signs and traffic lights will have to be removed, and entire streets and crossroads will have to be closed for other traffic and the trams.

Among this project’s special features is the off-site logistical concept, with components being placed in interim storage at a warehouse in Dublin. This solution guarantees just-in-time delivery on site.
