Laetus at the PPMA Show

Alsbach-Hähnlein, 18 August, 2011 – Laetus will be presenting innovative solutions for packaging control at the PPMA processing and packaging machinery exhibition in Birmingham. In Hall 5, at Stand F29, the specialist for camera-based control systems will be exhibiting machine applications for a wide range of labelling and verification requirements. The high-performance product PrintSpect TTS @ MV-50, the multifunctional INSPECT wt camera system, and the POLYPHEM wt blister inspection unit will be presented.

PrintSpect TTS @ MV-50 is an ideal solution for tight spaces. The compact machine impresses with high printing quality and extraordinary track & trace performance. It is well suited for precise serial printing and inspection of folding boxes for pharmaceuticals, even at high speeds of up to 400 boxes per minute. Its open design facilitates flexible integration into existing lines. The application is based on the modular PrintSpect wt marking and verification system from Laetus. Thus, coding such as the French CIP, as well as a complete e-Pedigree solution as demanded by California law, or the individual recording and serialization of folding boxes in accordance with the provisions of ITS Turkey or EFPIA can be implemented.

With the multifunctional INSPECT wt camera system, Laetus will present one of the leading applications for the inspection of quality characteristics of pharmaceutical products. The variable system even verifies coloured objects with high precision. Through the optimised barcode decoding software, sub-optimal imprints can be recognized accurately, even those with reduced contrast. The software also adjusts to varying reading distances, slight staining on the packaging and vibrations or fast movements during throughput. With its comprehensive range of features, INSPECT wt conforms to ISO and ANSI standards, which makes it ideal for the inspection of quality characteristics of barcodes, plain text and colour features on the packaging of pharmaceutical products.

The compact COCAM wt880 camera is integrated into the exhibit which is being presented at PPMA. It was specifically designed for applications, which require all common barcodes to be read without taking up much space. It reads, decodes, and verifies all common markings, such as 2-D stacked codes and barcodes, and can even be used where objects travel at a high speed.

The stand-alone SmartSpect solution will also be presented as an ID-Reader version. SmartSpect is the ideal solution when only certain prints and code formats need to be verified, such as 2D codes, stacked codes or linear barcodes. For example, it does not require the camera resolution to be adjusted or switched from monochrome to multicolour verification.

Laetus will present an innovative unit for online inspection on blister machines with POLYPHEM wt. It ensures the accurate inspection of a wide range of pharmaceutical products in blister packages. The inspection of blisters and their contents includes contour, size and surface properties. In addition to this, completeness, colour mix-ups, foreign objects and broken pieces are also checked for. Thanks to the integrated Web technology, multiple inspection devices can be monitored and managed with the Laetus NAVIGATOR. The MiraLux lighting system stands out thanks to its perfect construction design and allows fast access for changing formats.

An exciting new development that will be presented at an upcoming trade fair is the 3D analysis for blister inspection. The 3D form verification is achieved by two integrated cameras and enables the detection of surface flaws in tablets without contrast differences against the background. This is usually the case with gray tablets in aluminium blisters, for example. Even tablets which are missing the bottom half can be identified in this way.

Alternatively, two colour cameras arranged next to each other can boost 2D detection performance significantly. Each of the 5 megapixel cameras captures one half of the test area. Both captured images are combined into a single image. This doubles the horizontal resolution of the entire image. Furthermore, objects on the edge of the inspection area appear less distorted due to the lower distance to the camera.
