sidel_algar_agro_brazil_bottleGlobal packaging equipment provider Sidel has partnered with Brazil-based Algar Agro to develop a lightweight 900ml polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle for edible oil.

Algar Agro is involved in the production, processing and marketing of soybean and its derivative products.

The company’s food product lines include soybean oil, olive oil, composite oil, tomato extract and sauce, serving both the domestic and external markets.

Sidel said that the new PET bottles would be designed to reduce its total weight from 18g to 14g.

The new PET bottles will use Sidel’s weight-reducing technology to provide large savings in raw material used.

The technology will also reduce production, packaging and transportation costs, as well as minimise the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the production equipment.

Sidel has already conducted feasibility tests for the new design at its Packaging & Tooling Centre in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Algar Agro project manager Edney Valente Lima Filho said: “We put together the best industry suppliers and this is reflected in the project results.

“The success of Sidel was assured by the know-how demonstrated during the negotiation to propose and ensure the new bottle for vegetable oil.”

Algar Agro has acquired and installed two Sidel Matrix blow moulding systems for two of its production plants in Brazil.

The machines were installed in bottling lines that produce 25,000 PET bottles of vegetable oil per hour.

The installation followed a two year investigation and feasibility study into the integration process for the making and packaging of vegetable oils.

Sidel Matrix blowers enable up to 200 possible configurations and are specially designed to cut scrap.

Sidel is a manufacturing company providing packaging equipment for liquids such as water; carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks; and sensitive beverages like milk, liquid dairy products, juices, nectars, tea, coffee, isotonics and beer. Headquartered in Hünenberg, Switzerland, the company has 50 offices and 5,460 employees, eight research centres and 30,000 machines installed in more than 190 countries.
