propylester4Metalvuoto and NatureWorks have introduced new high-barrier biobased flexible substrates that are designed to help keep processed foods fresh for longer.

The new dual function film, Ingeo Propylester, has been made by integrating Metalvuoto’s coating technology with NatureWorks’ Ingeo films.

Metalvuoto executive director Gianni Costanzo said: “Until now, the flexible packaging industry has grown up around the use of multi-material laminates because no one material was able to provide multiple functionality.

“For example, brand owners often use an aluminium layer for barrier, a PET layer for external aesthetics, and an internal PE layer for heat-seal ability.

“Now, we have used the Metalvuoto Oxaqua coating technology with an Ingeo base film to replace two layers of different materials with one layer that simultaneously provides excellent barrier and heat-seal ability.”

Ingeo films with flavour and aroma barrier properties are made from plants unlike the usual wrap, films, labels and laminates that are made from oil-based materials.

These films with better folding and twist fold capabilities can be used for making shrink wrap, bags, envelope windows, laminated coatings and multi-layered performance packaging, NatureWorks said in its website.

The Ingeo-based metallised and coated film provides good seal strength, thereby eliminating the need for an additional sealant layer and enabling a structural package simplification.

Metalvuoto said that Ingeo Propylester allows using a two-layer pouch with performance matching that of three-layer pouches.

This film with barrier values less than 0.75 cc/m2/24hr for oxygen and 2.5 g/m2/24hr for water vapour offers better oxygen barrier, when compared with metallised biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP).
